Life in the Fichtehaus
Writing about the Fichtehaus is not an easy task. Every semester some of the 70 rooms welcome new students; the face of the Fichtehaus is therefore constantly changing.
However, perhaps it is for this reason in particular that a specific feature bears prominence; namely that in an independently-run student hall of residence, everyone is able to contribute something to the spirit of the house.
A single new face is enough to bring back to life the orchestra, the karate club, eurhythmics course or working group on Anthroposophy and Psychology and create a fresh atmosphere on the floors. This stems from the fact that everyone is invited to participate in extra-curricular activities, management and administration of the house and sharing of one’s interests.
To ensure that independently self-administered living works, every Fichtehaus resident is required to fulfil a specific task. For this reason some of those in the house are responsible for the library, whilst others care for the garden, fix repairs, put together the Fichtehaus-programme, look after the plants or clean (after all this too needs to be done). If the staircase is dirty and we’d rather seek refuge elsewhere or if the floors are clean enough for us to want to stay and join conversation amidst plants and pictures, all comes back down to us…
Everything a resident of the Fichtehaus may want can be found nearby. Edeka and an organic food shop, Kebab take-away and a Chinese restaurant ensure that our student well-being is maintained. The nearest bus station is directly opposite the house and the train station as well as the University campus and old town are in close proximity; especially by bike.
